What English test do I need for a UK Student visa?
The English level a Student visa requires (B2 at degree level, B1 below), the accepted ways to prove it, and why many students never sit a separate test.

Short answer: CEFR level B2 for degree-level courses and B1 below degree level. You can prove it with a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI, a degree taught in English assessed by Ecctis, a UK GCSE or A level in English, or by being a national of a majority-English-speaking country. Universities often assess English themselves and record it on the CAS.
The level
- Degree level and above: B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening
- Below degree level: B1
Ways to prove it
- A Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider, such as IELTS for UKVI
- A degree taught in English, assessed by Ecctis
- A GCSE, A level, Scottish National 4/5 or Higher in English gained at a UK school
- Nationality of a majority-English-speaking country on the Home Office list
Check before you book a test
For degree-level courses, universities often assess your English themselves (from your qualifications or their own test) and record it on the CAS, in which case the Home Office does not ask for a separate certificate.
