What is an eVisa share code and when do I need one?

Setting up

You created a UKVI account when you applied for the visa. Sign in, check the passport linked to it is current, and update it if you get a new passport; otherwise a border check fails.

Generating a code

Choose the purpose (right to work, right to rent, or "something else"), and the site gives a nine-character code like W12 345 67X. Give it with your date of birth. The employer or landlord sees your name, photo and permission, not your full record.

When you need one

• Starting a job, including part-time work during term
• Signing a tenancy in England (right to rent)
• Opening some bank accounts
• Proving status to a university or the NHS if asked

Keeping track

Codes expire after 90 days, and a code generated for right to rent will not work for a right-to-work check. The AnyRoot app stores your active codes with their expiry and purpose so you can copy the right one.
